Chicago/Turabian Style

What is Chicago Style & why is it sometimes called Turabian? Chicago style is a set of guidelines for organizing a paper and giving credit to sources used. It is most frequently used in history papers, but any subject may use it. Turabian is a shortened version of Chicago style published into a compact handbook. Turabian is typically used by college students.

This really neat Chicago Citation Template from easybib.com makes building citations a snap. Just fill in the blanks!

Notes & Bibliography

Chicago style citations are slightly different from MLA/APA. You have the option to use either Notes & Bibliography style or Author-Date style. Check with your professor to be certain which one you should use.

With Notes & Bibliography you still have a list of resources you used listed at the end of your paper. This is called a bibliography. However, instead of in-text citations, Chicago style uses footnotes. A superscript number at the end of a reference will match a number at the bottom of the page, where you will give a shortened citation for your source.

The bibliography listing will contain the full citation for any source you use.

Author-Date

Chicago style citations are slightly different from MLA/APA. Within Chicago you have the option to use either Notes & Bibliography or Author-Date style citations. Check with your professor to be certain which one you should use.

With Author-Date you still have a list of resources you used listed at the end of your paper. This is called a References List. Instead of using footnotes, you will use in-text citations with the author(s) last name(s), the year of the publication, and the page number referenced.

Example:

Source: Easybib. Author-Date Sample Citations.

The references listing will contain the full citation for any source you use.
